The Power of the Pride
Keynote Address
Ian Thomas, Motivational Speaker & African Game Ranger

Ian Thomas presents a riveting and informative account of how lions, the only cats that hunt in teams, can be compared with how businesses operate as teams.

Lions formed teams in order to hunt the vast herds of antelope that evolved onto Africa’s savannahs. The strategy of using teams to ambush these herds was extremely successful.

Individual lions and lionesses benefited from this association and the prides became extremely powerful. The presentation is based around this point – that the success of the team is because of the individual and the success of the individual is because of the team.

This “win-win situation” is the basis for successful lion prides and business teams.

The talk is in three parts.

1. Hunting
2. Raising the Cubs
3. Security

Ian then concludes the session by explaning how "“The strength of the pride is the lion and the strength of the lion is the pride.”

The Spoor of Success
Out of the Box Seminar Session
Ian Thomas, Motivational Speaker & African Game Ranger

It is widely accepted that the best way to cement such principles in people's minds is via the skillful telling of relevant stories; Ian has a proven track record in this regard.

While working as a guide at Londolozi, a game lodge in South Africa, Ian and his tracker Phineas faced a life threatening situation when they were tasked with tracking an extremely aggressive lion on a daily basis. Initially they were in crisis mode, but then made some crucial decisions that were rapidly implemented. This changed everything and Ian, Phineas, and the lodge went from strength to strength. He also has a business degree and believes that within this story are many powerful lessons that businesses caught in difficult times could learn and thrive on. This has resulted in a presentation that is content driven, but also contains humour, stunning photographs, threatening growls, and a story telling style that is so physical that he is forced to warm up before he starts.

Some of the principles that are highlighted in this presentation:
  • Make the difficult choices, doing nothing is dangerous.
  • The goal must be crystal clear and the method of achieving it completely understood.
  • You need people who are exceptional at what they do; everyone involved must be highly skilled, involved, and motivated: no passengers: no pretenders.
  • Vastly improved results must be rapidly achieved with the same or less costs: work smarter, work harder.
  • New sources of competitive advantage must be actively sought.
The presentation will illustrate that a crisis can be a powerful motivator and has the potential to lift the performance of both the individual and the business.

Mind the Gap: understanding different generations of staff and clients and their attitude to the financial industry
Industry Focused Session
Dr. Graeme Codrington, Co-Founder, Tomorrowtoday

It is more important now than it ever has been to understand the differences in worldview and attitude between young and old. Today's young people are not just younger versions of us: they have different expectations of work, life and finances.

But the same is true for today's older generation: they're unlikely to retire and are going to live longer than they expected to. This session will provide insights into why younger and older staff and clients see the world in such different ways, and what the financial sector can do to connect more effectively with them.
